El Corte Inglés located in Gran Vía, Abando, are turning on their characteristic Christmas lights early this year
They have decided to light up the building, beacuse of the COVID-19 crisis. The shopping mastodon was lit up last week - about one week earlier than last year-. 2020 has been and still is, a very different year in many ways. And El Corte Inglés has had to cancel two of their annual traditions because of it. The famous department store are now looking into a host of new activities to replace the things the virus has cancelled.
As much as the Christmas lights can remind us of last year's holidays, El Corte Inglés will not be the same this year. The Basque collier Olentzero will not be making a visit this year., nor will the Cartero Real be telling stories to children in costumes. In their absence, the shopping center has made it possible for the youngsters to chat with their Christmas heroes.
Additionally, El Corte Inglés has added three early Christmas-shopping days. On the 9th, 10th, and 11th of November it made special offers across all their floors. They also expanded their toy section to their affiliate. Yet, these activities haven’t been tied to the Covid-19 situation.
Christmas starts earlier
The festive holyday lights on Gran Vía will illuminate Abando for another year to extend the Christmas period. El Corte Inglés wants to give their costumers more time to make their Christmas purchases. They hope that lighting up the streets around their store will make people feel more full of Christmas spirit, and also to let its winter magic spark joy in this new uncomfortable normality.
